ICC Security Assessment: Bangladesh's T20 World Cup in India - What You Need to Know (2026)

In a surprising turn of events, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has released a security assessment regarding the Bangladesh cricket team’s upcoming participation in the 2026 T20 World Cup in India, indicating that there is no specific or heightened threat directed towards them. This internal evaluation was shared with the Bangladesh Cricket Board's (BCB) security team and concluded that while there are some low to moderate risks at certain venues, the overall threat level remains minimal across the board. Such assessments are standard practice for the ICC and typically do not warrant relocating games.

This revelation comes in the wake of comments made earlier by Asif Nazrul, the sports adviser for Bangladesh, who suggested that the ICC’s communication highlighted potential challenges for the Bangladesh team during the tournament. Nazrul, who serves as the country’s de facto sports head, mentioned in a statement that they had sent two letters to the ICC addressing their concerns, which led to the security team's response.

Nazrul outlined three significant factors he believed could pose security issues: the inclusion of Mustafizur Rahman in the squad, the implications of Bangladeshi fans wearing team jerseys in India, and the imminent elections in Bangladesh. He emphasized, "The ICC security team has unequivocally stated that there is no viable reason preventing the Bangladesh cricket team from participating in the T20 World Cup in India. To expect us to field a team without our leading bowler, deny our fans the right to wear their national colors, and delay our elections solely for cricket would be unrealistic and absurd."

As it stands, Bangladesh is set to compete in their initial three group matches in Kolkata, with an additional match slated for Mumbai. However, the situation surrounding these venues has become increasingly complicated following a directive from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to exclude Mustafizur from the Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL squad, a decision that has raised eyebrows amid escalating tensions between the two nations. Nazrul has since advocated for relocating Bangladesh’s matches out of India.

In a bid to clarify matters, another government official stated that the ICC assessment was not a direct response to Bangladesh's requests for relocation. Azad Majumder, deputy press secretary to Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, took to Facebook to explain, "The communication referenced by the sports adviser today was part of an inter-departmental note on security evaluations ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup in India and should not be misconstrued as a reaction to Bangladesh's appeal to shift matches elsewhere."

Following the controversy surrounding Mustafizur’s exclusion, the Bangladesh government made the controversial decision to ban the broadcast of the IPL within the country, while the BCB formally communicated its refusal to play the T20 World Cup matches in India.

Scheduled to commence on February 7, the 2026 T20 World Cup will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, setting the stage for what could be an intriguing series of matches amid a backdrop of political and security concerns.
